While Ali&#8217;i Drive, the bustling oceanfront street, is lined with eateries, many can trend towards the touristy crowd, so we’ve put this guide together to help you navigate to the options we think stand above the rest.</p>

<p style="text-align: left; display: block; font-size: 18px; padding: 0; line-height: 1.25; letter-spacing: 1px;">Always topping our list is the incredible <a style="text-decoration: underline; font-weight: lighter !important;" href="https://www.sushisamhawaii.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sushi Sam’s</a>, the best sushi on the island hands down (really, one of the best restaurants period) and just steps away from PACIFIC 19 Kona. Sam, a former chef at the famous Kukio Golf and Beach Club, decided to start his inaugural restaurant in 2021. With only a handful of tables plus sushi bar seating, it’s an intimate eating experience, so reserve ahead of time. However, sometimes you’ll be able to grab an available bar seat if you arrive at opening.</p>

This modest, off-the-beaten-path gem allows diners to bring their own beer, adding a casual touch to the dining experience. Known for its authentic flavors and cozy atmosphere, Krua Thai offers a delightful escape from the more tourist-centric spots in the area.</p>
<p style="text-align: left; display: block; font-size: 18px; padding: 0; line-height: 1.25; letter-spacing: 1px;">In the heart of Kona&#8217;s Brew Block, just a short distance from Pacific 19 Hotel, sits <a style="text-decoration: underline; font-weight: lighter !important;" href="https://willieshotchicken.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Willie&#8217;s Hot Chicken</a>, this lively eatery is celebrated for its no-frills, reliable service and, most importantly, its excellent fare (and don’t worry, they have mild flavors too if tongue-blazing heat isn’t your thing). Inspired by the iconic Nashville hot chicken tradition, Willie’s has quickly become a go-to spot in Kona for both locals and visitors.</p>


<p style="text-align: left; display: block; font-size: 18px; padding: 0; line-height: 1.25; letter-spacing: 1px;">Also in the Brew Block is <a style="text-decoration: underline; font-weight: lighter !important;" href="https://konabrewinghawaii.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kona Brewing Co.</a> Established in 1994, it has since been a pioneer in crafting unique, island-inspired beers. The on-site pub, known for its laid-back indoor-outdoor vibe is accented by handcrafted pizzas and local fare (we normally stick with the pizza). And, they’ve got a wide array of quirky t-shirts to go home with.</p>


<p style="text-align: left; display: block; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0; line-height: 1.25; letter-spacing: 1px;">For lunch, we often visit <a style="text-decoration: underline; font-weight: lighter !important;" href="https://www.poidogdeli.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Poi Dog Deli</a>. It brings together smoky southwestern flavors, Louisiana&#8217;s spicy Cajun, and Hawaii&#8217;s sweet freshness, that combine to make a menu of great sandwiches, wraps, and salads filled with fresh ingredients. Inside the deli you&#8217;ll find large communal tables and walls that are covered with memorabilia. This is definitely a local’s favorite.</p>

More laid back and much more available for your casual lunch or dinner drop in, they serve a diverse selection of authentic Japanese food, sushi, homemade ramen noodles, and lots of sake choices.</p>

You’ll take the &#8220;lower road&#8221; along Highway 19, also known as the Queen Ka&#8217;ahumanu Highway, that runs north along the coast, ending just south of Kawaihae. The views are beautiful, with the ocean visible for almost the entire stretch of the road, which cuts through vast volcanic lava fields and is characterized by the stark contrast between the deep blue of the Pacific and the rugged black lava fields.</p>

Waimea is a fascinating surprise for most travelers. It&#8217;s the heart of the paniolo culture, or Hawaiian cowboys, on the Big Island which date back before the cowboys of the American west.</p>

When the coast is dry and hot, Waimea can be much cooler, windy and often blanketed in a mist, making for a beautiful environment.</p>

The valley has a deep history. As a child, King Kamehameha I was hidden in this sacred place to protect him from a rival chief who wanted to prevent his rule.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">Mauna Kea, standing as the highest peak in Hawaii, Mauna Kea is much more than just a popular hiking destination; it is a sacred site deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and history. The summit is home to the world&#8217;s most advanced astronomical observatories, owing to its clear skies. However, this has also led to controversies around land use and cultural respect. We encourage visitors to approach Mauna Kea with reverence, acknowledging its significance to native Hawaiian people. It&#8217;s important to educate yourself on the proper protocols for visitation, including participating in a cultural briefing if possible, and to strictly follow designated paths to minimize ecological impact.</p>
<p style="text-align: center; margin-bottom: 30px">If you do decide to visit Mauna Kea, note that a 4&#215;4 vehicle is strictly required to reach the top Observatory area at the top. From the Big Island&#8217;s Saddle Road all cars regardless of 4&#215;4 can reach the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area, a small pullout and rest area about half way up the mountain where the paved road ends. Everyone is required to stop here regardless in order to acclimate to the altitude prior to ascending further. From there, you can easily access our recommended trail, should you want to traverse on foot, the Mauna Kea Mauna Kea Visitor Center Sunset Hill Trail. At 6,500 feet above sea level, this 1.2 mile there and back trail, will take you to an overlook with incredible views of both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes.<a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/ao5DqK2XDvG7vD5u6" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Google Map</a></p>

<p style="text-align: center;">The breathtaking Pololu Valley (correctly written Pololū Valley), with its dramatic cliffs and lush landscape, offers stunning views and a glimpse into Hawaii&#8217;s untouched beauty. However, its ecosystem is fragile, and the valley holds a special place in the hearts of the local community. To preserve its beauty and cultural importance, hikers are asked to respect the land by staying on marked trails, not disturbing native plants or wildlife, and packing out all trash. The journey to Pololū Valley is not just about enjoying its scenic views but also about understanding the responsibility that comes with visiting such a pristine natural area.</p>
<p style="text-align: center; margin-bottom: 30px">While just a short hike down, it is steep and unstable.  Should you decide to descend into Pololu Valley, we really only recommend this for sure footed, in-shape hikers.  Of course, you&#8217;ll see an array of visitors on the trail, but this inexperience leads to almost weekly rescue efforts required to bring up exhausted hikers from the elevation gain coming back up or those that get swept to sea in the strong currents of the bay.  Regardless, please listen to local volunteers advising on when it&#8217;s okay and safe to hike down to Pololu Valley, paying attention to the Big Island weather and current conditions that can change quickly.<br />

<p style="text-align: center; margin-bottom: 30px">Waipio Valley (correctly written Waipiʻo Valley), known as the &#8220;Valley of the Kings,&#8221; is rich in history, cultural significance, and breathtaking natural beauty, with its towering cliffs, vibrant taro fields, and the powerful Hi&#8217;ilawe Falls. This sacred valley is a living cultural landscape, where traditional Hawaiian ways of life are still practiced. Access to the valley floor is restricted to protect its delicate ecosystem and the privacy of its residents. The road to Waipio Valley is known for its steep grade, dropping 800 feet in just one mile, making it one of the steepest roads in the United States, accessible only to four-wheel drive vehicles due to its challenging and dangerous conditions. The trail crosses over numerous steep switchbacks and ridges, making it a strenuous trek reserved for experienced hikers.
