She was knowledgeable about everything we went to, and everything we drove by. The company has their own lava tube we got to explore, which was a very cool, unique experience. Walking around the lava remnants was like walking on the moon, probably as close as you can get on earth. Rain coats and walking sticks were available, as well as water and snacks. A simple picnic lunch and dinner were included. We initially planned to drive ourselves to the park, but I’m so glad we went with a guided tour. We wouldn’t have seen 90% of what we did, or learned so much about volcanoes and the area. Definitely a must do.</p>

Eugene was our tour guide and he took excellent care of us. We got to go in a lava tube owned by this company so not filled with tourists. <p>On a sunny day, the summit area of Kīlauea looks like it’s covered in spider webs. You’ll see fine fibers reflecting in the light and glimmering on the landscape. What you’re actually seeing are long strands of silica formed when a gas bubble burst at the surface of an eruption. Peleʻs hair can stretch out up to several feet long and about ten times thinner than an eyelash.</p>

<p>When lava fissures spew molten rock, it hardens in the air and falls as tephra. Some of this pyroclastic material forms Peleʻs tears: smooth, teardrop-shaped drops of hardened lava. Peleʻs tears and hair are generally formed together and separate during the process depending on how fast the lava droplets are ejected into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Wahinekapu, or the steaming bluff, is where steam rises up from cracks in the ground near the summit of Kilauea. It's also a great spot for a facial. Precipitation trickles down through the porous ground and hits rocks heated by magma from below. Steam rises up through stable cracks, formed in the rift zone near the summit of Kilauea.</p>

<p>Cut a cross section of this island and youʻd have a volcanic version of swiss cheese-holes through each layer of lava as this island formed. Lava tubes are everywhere on this island. Formed when the exposed surface of an above-ground flow hardens, insulated lava eventually carves its way down into the ground. The eruption subsides and you’re left with an empty tube.</p>

<p>The twists and turns of a lava tube reveal nāhuku hanging from the ceiling. Astute observers might think they’re normal stalactites, formed with every drip of water as minerals accumulate. Thatʻs not the case in a lava tube. Literally translated as the protuberances, these lava icicles dripped down when molten lava was flowing through the cave and melted the ceiling.</p>
<p>Some lava tubes in Hawaiʻi host rare bacteria. Scientists are still discovering different species of these simple organisms and learning how they work together to sustain life in pitch-black caves. Waste products of the microbial matting is visible on the cave walls.</p>

Evan took such good care of us! The sites were amazing. Several dolphin families /pods to watch from afar and babies spinning and playing. Lots of colorful fish, anemones and even a starfish! Not too many people… Evan was so much fun to be with! He told us “all the things” associated with the Captain Cook area, history and surroundings, but also truly cares about the wildlife and the environment…he keeps the rules to protect the dolphins, the people, and the beautiful Kaleakakua Bay!! The included lunch was so yummy! (thanks Coffee Shack!) We will definitely work with Kona boys again… Very laid back, happy to serve and super professional! The clarity of the water was truly awesome as were the corals and marine life inhabiting it. The paddle was fun, our guide, Bam, was also awesome and did a terrific job of providing historical background as well as important reminders to protect the area and it’s marine fauna and flora. We were provided a delicious lunch (yes, the best vegetarian sandwich I’ve had in a long time!) from a local cafe after ample time to explore the astounding underwater environment. They are a small, local company that most importantly promotes sustainability and ecological practices. This was our 2nd time over the years using their services and their standards remain top notch!</p>

Snorkeling was amazing. Go on the early morning tour to avoid the tour ships dropping people off to snorkel. Got crowded once they arrived. <p>Albert Einstein, one of the fathers of modern physics, said “everything is vibration.” And if mysticism is more your thing, ancient texts tell us the same thing, too. Take Hinduism, where Shiva dances the world into existence with the great Tandava, each foot stomp emanating vibrations. Christian traditions begin with “the word.” For Hawaiians, it’s the Kumulipo, the mele ko&#8217;ihonua, or creation chant. When Queen Liliʻuokalani translated this mele into English, she described it as a prayer of the development of the universe.</p>
<p>Before Christian missionaries came to Hawaiʻi and produced a written form of the language, the culture was passed down orally. Spoken words reverberate differently than written ones. An ancient Hawaiian proverb says I ka ʻolelo ke ola —  in language is the power of life. Language is a vibration that oscillates physical particles in the air. <p>Rare experiences kind of seem to be the norm here in paradise. A Sound Bath Meditation Journey is no different. First off, it’s taking place in the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary. It’s at that sweet spot on Hualālai that ranges from 2500 – 5000 feet in elevation; a 50-mile-long swath about five miles wide. Sometimes you could get water falling down in big fat drops the way you might expect in a tropical place. This is a cloud forest. So during the rainy season we advise guests to bring a rain jacket in case of showers.</p>
<p>The very nature of a cloud forest is self-sustaining. Trees cool their habitat by shading the ground and drawing water up into the canopy. Moist air rising up the mountain cools and turns to clouds. This foggy precipitation maintains the forests that created it. Cloud forests are rare. The Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary even more so because it’s a seasonally dry cloud forest. Winters are the dry season on the Kona side of Hawaiʻi. And if you’re visiting during the summer, expect it to be even more misty.</p>

<p>Native trees make up a large swath of the landscape here. ʻŌhiʻa lehua is the most common, making up about 80% of Hawaiʻi’s native forests throughout the islands. You’ll recognize it for its delicate, globe-like flowers that are usually deep crimson. Though in every 10,000 or so a genetic variation can create salmon pink, white, or even yellow lehua blossoms. Part of its scientific name is polymorpha. Many forms.</p>
<p>Pay attention to the ʻōhiʻa lehua in different areas of the island and you’ll see some diversity: straight, tall trunks with somewhat loosely flowing leaves on older parts of the island contrast with shrub-like variations elsewhere. Usually, the leaves are tucked in close to the limbs and branches of the tree to prevent absorbing toxic gasses from active volcanic eruptions. Knowing how to stay alive alongside lava is one of its super powers. Creating the perfect environment for humans to have soothing meditative experiences is definitely another.</p>

<p>A trip with ecotourism company Kohala Blue Sail Hawaii gets you out on the open ocean for snorkeling, fishing, playing in the water, and just plain fun. Diesel engines on most sailboats are loud and stinky. Rather than the wind rushing through halyards and lines, you’re hearing the roar of an engine and breathing its fumes. Not so with Kohala Blue — their boat is virtually silent as well as renewable, it&#8217;s just the elements and you!</p>

<p>You’re also traveling through the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, a nationally-designated whale habitat since 1992. Between November and April every year, about half of the humpback whales in the north Pacific migrate from Alaska to Hawaiʻi to give birth, nurse, and breed through these waters. Historic lava flows extend far into the ocean creating a shallow refuge for the thousands of whales that make the 3000 mile journey. Want to hear those whale songs up close? During the season, the crew will drop a hydrophone into the water so you can listen in real time to  the conversation between kohola— the Hawaiian word for whale.</p>
<p>Departing from Kawaihae Harbor has several advantages. Not only do you begin your adventure within the sanctuary itself, but this smaller harbor with fewer boats means far less congestion on the water than areas farther south. Some days youʻll luck out and be the only boat out on the water for miles around.</p>
<h1>What You Might See</h1>
<p>Whales aren’t the only species that come out to play in the shallow waters. Even in the summer months, you’re bound to come face-to-face with exotic sea creatures. Hawaiian spinner dolphins use the water as their playground. They range from about four-and-a-half to six-and-a-half feet long and spend all night hunting underwater to depths up to a thousand feet below sea level. Come daybreak, they’re often ready to rest in the shallow coastal waters where there’s less chance of a surprise attack from predators, while providing a place for young dolphins to socialize and play. They’re called spinner dolphins for a reason. These playful mammals can often be seen launching themselves out of the water and making up to seven full turns before falling back into the ocean.</p>

<p>If you’re lucky, you might see one of the most critically endangered animals in the United States. Hawaiian monk seals are endemic to the ocean around the state of Hawaiʻi, meaning they’re only found in the Pacific, scattered throughout the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain. With only about 1500 individuals in the wild they’re rare, but numbers in these protected waters are increasing.</p>

Complete your online waiver beforehand and arrive 10 minutes early for a seamless start. As you approach the harbor on Highway 270, take the first left into Kawaihae South Harbor, Gate 1, and then another quick left into Gate 13. Follow the road around past the boats and park near the boat ramp where the <i>Dolce Vita</i> and her crew will be waiting for you.</p>

No scripted speeches but personal and factual information given in a relaxed environment based on his personal experiences. Yes, we did see some whales, but unfortunately no real closeups. Nevertheless, the experience aboard the Riva is still one of our hallmarks of this vacation. Limited seating 6 guests sit where you want and take in the beautiful coastline while scanning for whales. <h1>Home of King Kamehameha | Unifier of the Islands</h1>
<p>Youʻve probably seen the name already: Kamehameha. Heʻs the man responsible for creating the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Born of royal descent in Kohala in 1758 under a stormy sky and while Halleyʻs Comet flew by — omens that a great leader had shown up.</p>
<p>Kamehamehaʻs uncle, Kalaniʻopuʻu, was in charge of the island of Hawaiʻi. So, after his death in 1782, ruling power was passed down the line to Kamehmehaʻs cousin, Kiwalaʻo. But Kamehameha wasnʻt completely left out of the spoils. He was told to look after the war god Kūkāʻilimoku, one of the four main gods in the Hawaiian religion. This cemented Kamehamehaʻs future as a great warrior and laid the path for unification.</p>

<p>Westerners first started coming to these islands extensively in 1778. They brought a lot of things in those early years: goats, diseases, new species of vegetation. But what Kamehameha was most interested in were their weapons. He befriended George Vancouver, who made multiple trips to the islands, and was also able to commandeer a ship with its weaponry. With these muskets and cannons — and the knowledge of how to use them from his new buddy — Kamehameha was able to dominate the other islands and eventually unite them all under his rule in 1810.</p>

<p>On the drive up Akoni Pule Highway in Kapaʻau, you'll notice a statue of the King himself. This was the original statue commissioned in the late 1800s, cast in France, and shipped to Hawaiʻi. Except the boat caught on fire on the way over. For about two years the statue was at the bottom of the ocean until it was recovered, recast, and installed in Kamehamehaʻs hometown in 1883. A replacement statue had long been remade and shipped to Honolulu. Thomas Ridgeway Gould, an American living in Italy designed the bronze casting. Check out its Romanesque sandals: an homage to Classical Roman pieces? Or a cultural disconnect with a designer who just couldnʻt fathom the custom of a great King going barefoot?</p>


<h1>Ola I Ka Wai | Water is Life</h1>
<p>The district of Kohala on the northern tip of Hawaiʻi Island has a dense history of agricultural activity. Even the Hawaiian creation chant tells us this is where Wākea and Hoʻohōkūkalani buried their first-born son. Up sprouted taro or kalo, which became the brother of the Hawaiian peoples. Ancient Hawaiians built complex loʻi, or terraces, along natural streams for growing the staple crop. Advanced farming techniques were key in supplying the needs of an entire island population. Many of the practices have been lost over time, unknowingly bulldozed or overgrown and left unrecognizable.</p>
<p>Land in ancient Hawaiʻi was divided into ahupuaʻa, long thin strips going from mauka to makai — from the inland mountains to the ocean — with boundaries generally matching the lines of a watershed. Water collects in vegetation-rich higher elevations of the wao akua, the realm of the gods, and funnels downhill. Water, wai, is sacred in Hawaiʻi. Those dependent on the land viscerally recognized that water is life.</p>

<p>Communities that grew kalo had a vested interest in maintaining the cleanliness of the waters used to irrigate their terraces. This was also the source of their water for day-to-day cooking and drinking. Water used for loʻi was taken in gratitude and reverence, water returned to the stream was done with respect.</p>
<p>This adventure will take you through a gulch where water once flowed. Hawaiian families, bare feet sinking into the mud, would tend their loʻi patches to grow enough kalo for themselves and extra to trade with other families in their ahupuaʻa. Wild pigs were hunted up the mountains, crops were grown in gulches, and seafood was harvested along the coast. The thread running through these lands was water.</p>

<p>King Kamehameha himself spent his later years gardening in Kohala, the landscape of his youth. He used a section of a diverted stream to water his own kalo patches. Stories conflict over when exactly the Waiʻāpuka Tunnel was built, an engineered canal siphoning off a section of the Waikama River, but Kamehameha was able to water his loʻi through its flow. Nineteen vertical columns were dug through lava rock about twenty feet deep and four feet wide to the level of a stream. They were then connected to allow water to flow through in an elaborate system fit for a king.</p>

<strong>Breathtaking Picnic View</strong> &#8211; Garry made this hike and waterfall tour worth the money. He was an excellent driver and narrator, wanting to make sure no question went unanswered. While the hike wasn’t very long, the waterfall swim was unique (and cold). The picnic lunch was perfect and the view was amazing and jaw dropping. Thank you Hawaii Forest and Trails for a fun adventure.</p>

<strong>Bucket list experience!</strong> &#8211; This tour was really cool. The falls were beautiful, the little hike was fun, and the view from our lunch spot was breathtaking. What really made the tour stand out for me though was our tour guide, Mark. You could tell he was a born “people person”. He knew exactly what to say to everyone at exactly the right time. He took care of our safety, made us all feel included, and seemed to genuinely care that we were having a good time. He had this hunger for knowledge and a beautiful appreciation for life and for all that it offers, that was really contagious. I don’t think I’ve ever been so impacted by another human being in such a short amount of time. He taught me many things on this tour, about the island and about life, that I will never forget.</p>

<strong>Nice Hike</strong> &#8211; Our guide, Mark, was GREAT, and the hike was nice, but the falls were a little disappointing. The best part of the tour was the magnificent overlook location where we had our lunch.</p>

They have very small intimate tour groups which made the experience even better. We learned so much about bees and the best ways we can help our bees in Texas.</p>
<p>Joe was an amazing tour guide and insanely knowledgeable about bees and beekeeping. Joe was the funniest most engaging tour guide I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of meeting. The honey tasting at the end of the tour was mind-blowing. I&#8217;ve always liked honey, but even if you don&#8217;t you should give this honey a try. Several varieties of honey for tasting. We liked spicy 🌶️ honey 🍯. They offer guided tours on specific time. We did not take the tour due to schedule conflicts.</p>
